CELEBRATING 25 YEARS TOGETHER!
In 1989 I was an art student at the University of Louisville (UofL) taking foundation art classes in drawing, color, 2-D design, and 3-D design. I was studying with instructor Ying Kit Chan, now Professor Chan, chair of the Fine Art Department at UofL. He announced a UofL Studies Abroad Program in Paris, France. It was a very significant time in French history, the semester was planned to coincide with the 200th anniversary of the French Revolution, (1789). Yes, I signed up for a semester of DRAWING IN PARIS and ART HISTORY, both for college credit towards my painting degree. So began my marvelous, life-changing journey to Paris, France.
I was drawing daily throughout the City of Lights, taking the Metro, and with my art history class I spent days touring the paintings and sculptures in the Louvre. Another full day, we traveled to Giverny, visiting Monet's home and spectacular blooming gardens. While I was walking over his turquoise bridges, I felt like I was in the midst of his paintings...
After completing my Paris studies, I left for Italy by train with a small group of UofL students. At the train station I found myself in another Monet painting, Gare Saint-Lazare. Even today, the train station is exactly like Monet's painting, the only difference is the new locomotives.
I traveled through Switzerland and on to Venice, Italy, where I continued to draw daily. I met new Italian friends, even being invited to some of their homes for dinner. With a new friend from Marseilles, France we drove to historic villas, galleries, and in Verona we visited Romeo and Juliet's famous balcony and graves. From there I went on to visit Bassano del Grappa, Bologna, Assisi, Siena, Perugia, Florence, and Rome.
After 3 months from Paris to Rome, my fabulous journey was ending. I said my goodbyes to new friends, returned home to Louisville, and continued my UofL art studies. In late 1990, I opened Art Studio Smythe, and my joy continues to this day!
"Yes, it was a marvelous adventure and here I am 25 years later teaching 100s and 1000s of BEGINNERS to paint on canvas. I'd love to show you how to get started and paint your very first painting at my art studio."
